Tips for Driving in a Storm

November 23rd, 2021 by

Here in Miami, we’re no strangers to extreme weather. Daily thunderstorms and occasional tropical storms (or even hurricanes) can make for quite the challenge, and it’s important to know how to drive safely in adverse conditions.

DRIVING SAFELY IN A STORM

Don’t tailgate: Braking becomes a lot harder in a torrential downpour, and attempting to slam on the brakes when the roads are wet can send you spinning out of control. Maintain excessive distance from whoever you’re following if you have to drive during heavy rains.

Keep it slow: At just about 35 miles per hour or more, you’re technically hydroplaning: That means you’re passing over a wet road faster than your tires can disperse it, meaning you’re mostly driving over water. Traction and control are severely diminished. That doesn’t mean you have to drive below 35mph to be safe during a storm, but it does mean you should keep your car at or below the speed limit.

Have your headlights on: It’s hard enough to see during a heavy thunderstorm, so you should have your headlights on to help see the road ahead. They also allow other cars to see your vehicle much more easily, particularly if you’re driving a grey or dark-colored vehicle that can get lost in the clouds and murk.

Don’t use your hazard lights: Some drivers feel compelled, if they are driving well below the speed limit, to put their hazard lights on. In Florida, it’s actually illegal to drive with your hazard lights on in the rain. It can cause confusion and be distracting during already-perilous circumstances.

Make sure your tires are healthy: Good tire tread and inflation can go a long way towards keeping you safe on slippery roads. Make sure your tires are inflated to the level recommended in your owner’s manual, and if the treads are worn down, head to our service center to get your tires replaced!
